Wednesday, 7 March 2018 - 6:30pm - 9:00pm

Join us for a Film Screening & Discussion!

Venue: The Showroom, 63 Penfold Street, London NW8 8PQ

Please note: This event is happening on Wednesday (rather than our usual Thursday events) and it starts at 6:30pm!

Criminal Queers, directed by Eric A. Stanley and Chris E. Vargas (USA, 2015, 63 min) visualises a radical trans/queer struggle against the prison industrial complex and toward a world without walls. Remembering that prison breaks are both a theoretical and material practice of freedom, this film imagines what spaces might be opened up if crowbars, wigs, and metal files become tools for transformation. Follow Yoshi, Joy, Susan and Lucy as they fiercely read everything from the Human Rights Campaign and hate crimes legislation to the non-profitisation of social movements.

This event is free but booking is required. Click here to reserve a place.

Accessibility: The Showroom has one step-free entrance on Boscobel Street and a platform lift to the first floor Studio Space. It has an accessible toilet. If you face other access barriers or have particular support needs, please contact us so we can arrange support.

This event is being co-hosted by the Bent Bars Project, Reclaim Holloway - The Women's Building Group, and Cinenova, as part of a series of events leading up to the Abolitionist Futures conference.

Thursday, 12 April 2018 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm

About Bent Bars Drop-in Sessions:

The Bent Bars Project runs regular drop-in sessions for current and prospective penpals and volunteers. The drop-in sessions offer a space to introduce new people to the project, provide support and discuss issues.

Come and get ideas about writing to a prisoner for the first time. Find out about how to get matched with a prisoner who is looking for a penpal. Or if you already have a penpal, our drop-in sessions provide a space to ask questions and discuss any issues that come have come up when writing.

You can also find out about getting more involved in the project in other ways - whether it's working on our next newsletter, getting involved in outreach, helping with fundraising, collecting resources or helping with the general day to day tasks of the organising collective.

The sessions are usually held on the 2nd Thursday of the month in Central London. Please email us for the location and to let us know you are coming.

We also hold special events four times a year, often involving film screenings, guest speakers, reading groups and other educational events. To find out whether we are holding a drop-in or special event, please check our events calendar.

Most of our meetings are currently held in London, but if you'd like to host a meeting in your own area, get in touch and we may be able to help you set one up.

Accessibility:  Please note that the building where we host the drop-ins has two steps to get into the main entrance, but we do have a ramp for access. If you face access barriers, please let us know in advance so we can make any arrangements to support your visit.
